I walked to homeroom and set my books down on my desk. I sat in the back of the room, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I could write and whisper whatever I wanted to and I could even chew gum without the teacher noticing. It was a nice way to start off the morning.
As soon as I sat down in my desk, my best friend, Kate, rushed over to my seat. Kate and I had been best friends since the first grade, when I first moved here. She had a personality very similar to mine, which wasn't common. I don't know many girls at Hartford Middle like us. Most of the girls at Hartford Middle are VERY preppy.
"Hey Ash." Kate said.
"Sup Kate."
"What's that?" she asked, pointing to my pocket. Part of the envelope was sticking out.
"Some note I found in my locker." I responded. "Whoever wrote it didn't sign their name."
"Seems cowardly." she replied. "Open it up."
I sliced the bottom of the envelope open with my fingernail. A folded up piece of notebook paper fell onto the desk. Kate snatched it up and unfolded it. I sighed as she read through the note. Her face twisted into a mix of confusion, delight, and nausea. I knew this wasn't a good sign.
She tossed the note to me and I read it.
Ash,
Hey. I know what you're thinking. I'm
a coward for not signing my name.
I'm just kinda shy. I wanted to tell you
that you're beautiful and I really like
you. You will find out who I am
eventually, though, but only when I'm
ready. Until then, just remember, and
never forget, that you are beautiful.
I groaned. The note was touching, and it made me feel good about myself, but I didn't want a boyfriend. All dating does is ruin your normal friendship with somebody and break your heart. Kate knew this, too.
The bell rang then. Kate gave me a 'sorry I'll see ya later' look and went back to her seat. The teacher came into the room and started to drone on about something boring. Meanwhile, I thought about who could have written the note.
