At lunch, I got Kate caught up on the whole crushes/notes situation. She shook her head at me.
"Your life is beginning to get very complicated." she pointed out.
I glared at her. "No need to make me feel bad about it."
She smiled. I laughed and finished eating my usual peanut butter sandwich.
*******
After lunch, I checked my locker.
My note was gone. Charlotte and Kate, who were at my side, looked at me with a devious smile.
I opened my locker and found another small green envelope, which had gotten caught on my math textbook. I picked it up and frantically ripped it open. Inside, there was only a small scrap piece of notebook paper. I read the tiny handwriting.
: )
Meet me after school, in the chorus room.
*******
I don't know how, but I got through the day without dying of anxiety. When the final bell rang, I ran to my locker. As I got my books, I remembered my message I had written:
Whoever this is:
You have no reason to be shy. I have
read your notes and know that you
are a good person and, darn it,
you've made me feel the same way as
you with your sweet comments. We
most likely have a future. I know that
you care. Whoever this is, I LOVE YOU.
Yes, that's right, ASH RAY has just told
someone she loves them. That's a
first. You should be proud. Now can you
please tell me who you are?
I wasn't lying about a word I said either. I finished getting my books, put my hood on, and made my way to the chorus room. As I walked, my whole life flashed before my eyes.
I suddenly remembered my third birthday party, with the chocolate cake.
One step.
I remembered leaving my mother on the first day of kindergarten.
Two steps.
I remembered packing my belongings in boxes to move to Charelston.
Three steps.
I remembered meeting Kate on my first day of first grade.
With each step, another part of my life flashed before me, until I finally got to the chorus room. I opened the door slowly, and there he was.
